Two Zeros and The Library of Doom! Gil Grimoire Volume 1 Eric Bonkowski 9780615945965 Books Reviews

I'm not much of a big reader but as soon as I read the first page Iwas swept away by my imagination and before I knew it I was finished reading. Really excellent book, I hope I can wait for the next books to come out, getting anxious to know what happens next. If u are reading this review I highly advise you to get this book.
This is a thoroughly accessible and enjoyable read. The voice of the narrator brings to mind the whimsical, tongue-in cheek accounts of Dr. Watson, while the actual narration makes reference to more recent pop-culture in such a way as to make the reader feel integrated, as if they were hearing the story from a friend over a micro-brew libation, instead of reading it. The author also employs the use of foreshadowing to keep the reader interested, without being condescending and giving so much information as to give away the ending too soon. The characters have distinctive voices that ring true to their personalities as described by the narrator, and whether the reader can relate to them or not they are interesting and humorously engaging. It is hard to categorize, and so should be read and enjoyed by anyone tired of sparkling vampires and repressed sexual deviance being considered as an intriguing read. It's intelligent fantasy similar to the works of Lev Grossman, in that it effectively combines the magical and mysterious with the modern world to blur the lines of feasibility.
Wow. This book was just a whirlwind of fun! While Fantasy/Detective/Monster-hunting is not my typical genre (as evidenced by the fact that I can't come up with a single word that describes this category), I will certainly be looking forward to the rest of this series by Eric Bonkowski. Although I don't read too many books like this, as a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer I can say that Eric Bonkowski reminds me of an up and coming Joss Whedon in terms of subject matter (monster hunting... I mean, that one's pretty obvious) and style (the wit, geeky humor, excellent characterization, and even hints of deeper meaning behind the action). Despite reminding me of the formidable Joss, Mr. Bonkowski has a unique voice, and this debut is distinctly impressive.

The book is well-paced. If anything, it goes almost too fast... it left me feeling breathless. I wondered, seeing as how I felt winded just *reading* about the harrowing trials the protagonists faced, how they could have possibly survived their ordeals. It required some suspension of disbelief, but I didn't mind; I enjoyed being swept along for the wild ride. Likewise, the setting is masterfully depicted. The description is superb, transporting the reader into the dark, crumbling mansion/sanitarium and into the midst of the action. Details add to the immediacy and realism without bogging down the reader. There is serious cinematic or graphic novel potential here.

When I had to put the book down (out of necessity for caring for my daughter... not because I ever wanted to!) I had time to take a break from the action and wonder about some of the philosophical and, dare I say, theological implications of this book. Trying to avoid spoilers, one of the themes of this book is the power of ideas and how they have real and sometimes disastrous results in history. Let's just say, it will lead the reader to ponder anew the meaning of, "The pen is mightier than the sword." While it's hard to think too deeply about it when you're swept up in the creepy horror of the decrepit, labyrinthine Callowleigh mansion or caught up with Gil or Dylan in the tentacles of a demonic Kraken, you're subtly being fed philosophical food for thought to chew on when you have to close the book. Or at least I was. But to say much more is to give too much away.
It was imaginative and good paced. I liked the dynamic of the characters and the twist in what you thought you knew. I would read more
Really good book. Unexpected twists that kept me interested. I like fantasy scifi and this definitly works for well for me.
