My two daughters (now 14 and 18) have grown up being read and later reading Lena Merika's youth literature. She has an amazing talent for capturing the details that are important to kids in natural and humorous prose. Never patronizing or preachy, her characters come alive and share their adventures, laughter and sighs. I would say she is the Greek Judy Blume.'Housedad' struck a particular chord with us because at the time of its initial publication in Greek our family was living the situations being described (albeit with one less child to contend with, but our own three-year-old tyrant wearing a pink bow and baubles!). My husband was in the midst of a 180 degree career change which included re-training, and I was freelancing crazy hours so that I had the kids when he was at school and he had the kids while I was struggling to meet back-breaking deadlines. Lena's precocious twelve-year-old narrator helped us laugh at our own growing pains as our family dynamic shifted. I can't wait for her other titles to be translated as well.
